Change or cancel your plan

Upgrade, switch between paid plans, cancel and resume, and what happens to your letters, files and credits afterwards.

6 minutes to read

You change your plan on the Subscription page and you cancel it on the Billing page. Both are in the sidebar under Account. Billing is shown there once your account has something to bill: a plan, a credit purchase or company details for invoices. Letters you have already scheduled are delivered whatever you do here.

Go from Free to a paid plan

  1. Open the Subscription page

Under Upgrade Your Plan you see the plans on sale, each with its limits and features.

  2. Choose a plan

Each card has a button that starts with Upgrade to and ends with the name of the plan. Press the one you want.

  3. Pay

You are taken to the payment page of Stripe, which handles our payments. The plan is billed once a month, in US dollars.

  4. Come back

After the payment you land on the dashboard and a message names your new plan. The new limits apply at once.

  • If you leave the payment page without paying, you return to the Subscription page with the notice Payment canceled. Nothing is charged and your plan is unchanged
  • The letters you have already sent this month still count. They are now measured against the larger limit
  • If the plan includes paper letter credits, the first ones are added with this first payment
  • If you have switched on Use company details on invoices in Settings, the first invoice already carries your company. See invoices and payment method

Switch between paid plans

  1. Choose the other plan

On the Subscription page, under Available Plans, press the button that starts with Switch to.

  2. Check and confirm

A dialog shows your Current plan and the New plan with their prices. Press Switch plan to go ahead, or Keep current plan to leave everything as it is.

There is no payment page this time. The plan changes right away, and the difference for the rest of the current billing period is settled at once:

  • To a larger plan: the difference is charged to your saved payment method immediately
  • To a smaller plan: the difference becomes a credit that is taken off your next invoice. Nothing is paid back to your card
  • Paper letter credits that a plan includes are not added by a switch in the middle of a period. They come with the next renewal

If the charge for a larger plan does not go through, your plan stays as it was and the app tells you so. Check your payment method in the billing portal (see invoices and payment method). Once the open invoice is paid, the new plan is applied by itself.

Cancel your plan

Going back to Free means cancelling. On the Subscription page the Free card has the button Cancel on the billing page, which takes you to the right place.

  1. Open the Billing page

The card at the top shows your plan, its status and the current period.

  2. Press Cancel Subscription

The dialog Cancel subscription? says when the plan ends and what happens after it.

  3. Confirm

Press Cancel at Period End, or Cancel now when the last payment failed. Keep Subscription closes the dialog without changing anything.

What ending at period end means

  • Your plan keeps running, with all its limits and features, until the last day of the period you have paid for. The Billing page shows that day next to Ends
  • There is no refund for the period that is running
  • No further payment is taken. Next invoice shows No further payments
  • On that day your account moves to the Free plan

Cancel after a failed payment

When the status is Past Due or Unpaid, there is no paid period left to run out. The dialog then says The last payment failed, so there is no paid period left. Your subscription ends as soon as you confirm., and the button is Cancel now.

  • Your account moves to the Free plan right away
  • The open invoice is no longer collected, and nothing more is charged
  • The message Your subscription has ended. Your account is on the Free plan now. confirms it
  • This also works for a subscription you had already set to end with its period

Resume before the end

Until the end day, the Billing page shows a notice with the day your plan ends and the button Resume subscription. Press it and the plan continues and renews as before. After the end day the subscription is gone: choose a plan again on the Subscription page, which starts a new subscription with a first payment.

After a downgrade or when a plan ends

The limits of the smaller plan apply from the moment it starts. Nothing you have is deleted.

WhatWhat happens
Scheduled email lettersDelivered on their day. They were counted when you scheduled them.
Scheduled paper lettersPosted on their day. They are already paid with credits.
Email layoutsA letter written with a layout the new plan does not include goes out in the standard layout. This is decided at the moment of delivery.
Anonymous lettersA letter that was scheduled as anonymous stays anonymous.
Changing a scheduled email letterA letter that is still waiting for its date can only be changed while your plan includes it. Plans that do: Postmaster. Deleting a scheduled letter and correcting a failed one are possible on every plan.
Letters this monthThe count is not reset. If you have already sent more than the new plan allows, you cannot send email letters until the next reset day.
Schedule aheadDates you have already set stay. New letters follow the shorter range. A scheduled paper letter can still be edited: its posting day only has to fit the new range if you move it.
FilesStored files stay, and nothing changes for the recipients of letters that carry them. If they take more room than the new plan gives, or you have already uploaded more files this month than it allows, you cannot upload new files until there is room again.
CreditsThey stay on your account and work on every plan, including the credits a plan gave you. No new included credits are added.
Credit pack pricesThe prices of Postmaster apply only while that plan is running.

When a payment fails

  • When a renewal cannot be charged, we send an email to the address of your account. Its subject is Payment issue with your FuturePostman subscription, and it is in English
  • The Billing page shows the status Past Due and the notice Payment needed. Press Pay or change card in that notice. It opens the billing portal, where you pay the open invoice or replace your card
  • Your plan stays while the payment is tried again, and it carries on as soon as the payment goes through
  • If the payment is not made in the end, the subscription stops or is marked Unpaid, and your account goes back to the limits of the Free plan. Scheduled letters are still delivered and credits stay
  • If you would rather stop than pay, cancel the subscription. It then ends at once and the open invoice is no longer collected. See cancel after a failed payment

Get your plan back after an unpaid subscription

  • The Billing page stays open on the Free plan. It still shows the unpaid subscription with Payment needed and Pay or change card. Pay the open invoice and your plan comes back
  • While the unpaid subscription exists, a new upgrade on the Subscription page is refused. You see This account already has a subscription with the button Open billing, which takes you to the Billing page
  • If you would rather have another plan, cancel the unpaid subscription on the Billing page first. It ends at once, and you can then choose a plan on the Subscription page
  • If you are stuck, contact us and choose Billing as the reason
