Share a letter in the public gallery

Publish an email letter for anyone to read, signed with a name you choose or anonymously, and manage it afterwards on My public letters.

6 minutes to read

The public gallery is a page where anyone can read letters that their writers chose to share. You add an email letter to it while you write it, on any plan. Paper letters cannot be published.

Publish a letter from the composer

  1. Write the letter

Open the composer and write an email letter as usual: recipients, subject and text. The subject becomes the title in the gallery.

  2. Switch on the gallery option

Open More options and switch on Also publish in the public gallery.

  3. Choose how it is signed

Hide my name is on at first, and the letter is signed Anonymous. Switch it off to type a Name to show, up to 50 characters. While the name is empty, the composer says Without a name, the letter is signed Anonymous.

  4. Choose when it appears

Publish when it is delivered is on at first: the letter appears in the gallery once it has been delivered. Switch it off and it appears as soon as a moderator has approved it. For a scheduled letter the composer then warns you that the letter can appear in the gallery before your recipient gets it.

  5. Send or schedule

The last look before sending lists Published in the public gallery under Options. After you confirm, the letter waits for review.

What becomes public and what never does

Readers see

  • The subject, as the title
  • The whole text. Links stay, pictures and other media inside the text are not shown
  • The name you chose, or Anonymous
  • Your tags
  • The day the letter was written and, once it is delivered, the day of delivery and the time in between
  • How many views, likes and comments the letter has

Never shown

  • The recipients and their email addresses
  • Attached files and recordings
  • The name and the email address of your account, unless you type them as the name to show
  • The private link and the access code of the recipient

Sign with a name or stay anonymous

The name in the gallery is never taken from your account. It is what you type in Name to show: a first name, a pen name or a short description of who is writing.

With Hide my name switched on, or with the name left empty, the letter is signed Anonymous. A hidden name is kept, so you can show it again later.

This is a different setting from Send anonymously, which hides your name from the recipient of the letter. See anonymous sending.

Manage a letter on My public letters

Open My public letters in the sidebar. The page lists every letter you sent to the gallery, with the name it is signed with, its status and, under In the gallery, when it appears or since when it is there. A letter you took out of the gallery stays in the list, also after you edit it.

  1. In review
  2. Approved
  3. Published
  • Not approved
  • Not public
The statuses of a public letter as My public letters shows them.
StatusWhat it means
In reviewA moderator reads the letter before it appears. Nobody else can see it yet.
ApprovedApproved, but not in the gallery yet. The page shows the day it appears, or When delivered for a letter that waits for its delivery.
PublishedAnyone can read the letter in the gallery.
Not approvedA moderator did not approve the letter. It is not shown, and its row gives the moderator's reason.
Not publicYou took the letter out of the gallery. You can publish it again.

You get an email when a moderator has decided. How the review works and what is not accepted is explained in how public letters are reviewed.

Change the name or the tags

Select a letter in the list, or open its menu and choose Name and tags. Change what you want and press Save changes.

Hide my name
Signs the letter Anonymous. Hiding a name shows right away and needs no review.
Name to show
Up to 50 characters. A moderator reads a new name before the letter is shown with it. The same goes for a name you show again after it was hidden when the letter was approved.
Tags
Topics that readers can filter the gallery by. Separate them with commas. A letter can have up to 5 tags of up to 30 characters each, in any language. Capital letters become small, and punctuation and symbols are dropped. A moderator reads new tags too. A card in the gallery shows the first 3.

Take a letter out and put it back

  1. Open the menu of the letter and choose Take out of the gallery, then confirm with Take it out. The letter leaves the gallery right away and its status becomes Not public. Its likes and comments are kept with it.
  2. To bring it back, choose Publish again and confirm with Send for review. A moderator reads the letter again before it reappears, at the same address as before.

Publish again is refused for a letter that a moderator did not approve and that has not changed since. Change its title or its text first. See if your letter is not approved.

Taking a letter out of the gallery does not change its delivery. To remove the letter everywhere, delete it under Manage Letters. Its page in the gallery goes with it, together with its likes and comments.

Good to know

  • The gallery does not change the delivery. The recipient gets the letter on its day, whether it is in review, approved or not approved.
  • You get an email when your letter is approved or not approved. You get no message when someone likes it or comments on it.
  • A change to the subject or the text of a public letter that has not been delivered yet sends it back to review. See changes that are reviewed again.
  • A letter set to appear on delivery keeps the status Approved when the delivery is late or fails, and the page shows When delivered instead of a day. It appears once the letter has gone out.
  • When a change cannot be saved, the page says That did not work. Please try again. Reload the page and try once more.
