When it needs more than a free letter has: a delivery date further than a year ahead (up to 100 years), more or larger files, a longer recording, another email layout, anonymous sending, a text message, or when the free letters of the month are used up. The composer says so before you send.
You buy them in packs, they stay in your wallet, and they never expire. A paid email letter takes 1 credit or more: 1 credit more for every 5 years it waits beyond the first 5 years, and 1 credit more for every 25 MB of files beyond 25 MB. A paper letter takes 6 credits or more. Deleting a letter before it goes out gives the credits back.

No. The free letters start again on the first of each month. Credits, on the other hand, never expire.
