A time capsule your whole group writes, and opens together

Everyone writes a letter. Nobody reads it, not even you. On the day you choose, everyone gets an email and you open it together.

Free for up to 8 people and up to one year. Larger capsules are one payment, from $29.

How it works

One New Year capsule, from the first invitation to the evening it opens.

  1. You start it

Pick the occasion, the look and the day

Give the capsule a name, choose how it looks and when it opens. Then send the link to your people.

    • The occasion brings its own questions
    • Send one link to the group chat, or invite people by email
    • Nobody else needs an account or an app
  2. Everyone writes

    Everyone writes a sealed letter

Each person answers a few short questions and writes a letter. Then they press Seal. Nobody can read it, not even you.

    • One question per screen, in large letters
    • No computer? Call a number and speak the letter
    • The letter is saved as they write
  3. You open it together

On the day, everyone opens it at once

Everyone gets an email at the same moment. The letters come out one by one, and the answers go up side by side.

    • One email with one big button
    • The answers side by side: who was right?
    • Leave a mark on a letter, or write a few words back

For every group that will meet again

Each occasion comes with its own questions and its own look. You can change both, or write your own.

Ten looks to choose from

The look dresses the capsule page, the writing, the wax seal and the opening. You can change it until the day.

  • Parchment
  • Midnight
  • Garden
  • Ocean
  • Confetti
  • Winter
  • Gold
  • Blossom
  • Ember
  • Plain and clear

What makes it different

Most time capsule apps are a photo album with a lock. This one is about what people write to each other.

  • Questions, and a board of answers

Everyone answers the same few questions. At the opening the answers go up side by side, and you see who guessed right.

  • A real seal

Pressing Seal closes the letter. Nobody can read it before the day, not you, not us.

  • Opened together

Everyone gets the email at the same moment. You can also hold the opening until everyone is in the room, and press the button together.

  • Letters by phone

Grandparents without a smartphone can call a number, key a code and speak their letter.

  • On paper too

The Vault size comes with a printed book of every letter, to hand round when it opens.

  • Ready for ten years and more

Email addresses change. For long capsules we ask once a year if each address still works, and tell you if one does not.

  • In everyone's own language

The site speaks seventeen languages. Each person sees the pages and the questions in their own, and the letters stay as they were written.

Questions people ask

Do people need an app or an account?

No. They open the link on their phone or computer, give their name and email, and write. Only you, who start the capsule, need an account.

Who can read the letters?

Before the day, nobody. After it opens, only the people in the capsule. Each person opens it from their own link in the email.

Can I read the letters before it opens? I started it.

No. You see who has sealed a letter and who has not, never a word of what they wrote. That is the whole point.

What if someone forgets to write?

Your page shows who has not sealed yet, and you can send them their link again. We also email them the day before writing closes. The capsule opens with the letters that are in.

How far ahead can it open?

Up to 1 year on the free size, 10 years on Capsule and 25 years on Vault.

What does it cost?

A capsule for up to 8 people that opens within a year is free. Capsule is $29 and Vault is $79, paid once for the whole group. Nobody else pays anything.

Can someone take part by phone?

Yes. They call our number, key the capsule's code and speak their letter. It is sealed like the others and opens on the same day.

Can people add photos?

Yes, on Capsule and Vault: up to 10 photos with each letter. Vault also takes a short video. On every size people can record a spoken letter instead of writing.

What happens after it opens?

The capsule stays open for 30 days on the free size, 2 years on Capsule and 5 years on Vault. On the larger sizes you can save it all as one PDF. Then it is deleted, and we email you a month before.

Is it private?

Yes. The capsule is never public and never listed anywhere. The letters and the email addresses are stored encrypted, and nothing in our emails carries the words of a letter.
